Pergola
Pergola
A pergola is an outdoor garden feature that forms a shaded walkway, passage, or seating area with vertical posts or columns that often support beams and a strong open trellis on which wood vines are often trained. The origin of the word is the Late Latin pergula, which refers to the protruding eaves.
As a type of pavilion, it can also be an extension of a building, or serve as a protection for an open terrace or a connection between pavilions. They are different from green tunnels, which are a type of road under the tree canopy.
A trellis is sometimes confused with “arbor” because the terms are used interchangeably. Generally speaking, a “gazebo” is considered a wooden bench with a roof, usually surrounded by lattice panels, forming a frame for climbing plants; in evangelical Christianity, scrub revival occurs under this structure.
A pergola, on the other hand, is a larger, more open structure. Typically, pergolas do not include integral seating.
